How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are several pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car can start when the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles.
